Perlman Janet
Born in Montreal, Janet Perlman has had an impressive career in animation, directing shorts, commercials and educational productions. Along with her independent work, her films produced by the NFB have received international acclaim, including an Oscar® nomination for The Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin.
Janet has taught animation at Harvard and at the Rhode Island School of Design, and has written and illustrated four books: Penguins Behind Bars, Cinderella Penguin, The Emperor Penguin's New Clothes and The Penguin and the Pea.
Her films from the ShowPeace series on conflict resolution (Dinner for Two and Bully Dance) received major awards in Chicago, Montreal and Berlin.
Penguins Behind Bars (2003) received a Pulcinella for best television film. Her independent work, My Favorite Things That I Love, won the coveted Best Bad Taste award at The Ottawa International Film Festival.
Her most recent work for the NFB is the 2005 Invasion of the Space Lobsters, a co-production with the Canadian Labour Congress. It's a tongue-in-cheek look at doublespeak and bafflegab and is a plea for plain language.
Her Montreal-based company, Hulascope Studio, produces films for television.
