Sylvestre Pierre
Pierre Sylvestre was born in Montreal and studied mathematics, painting and graphic design before undertaking a degree in film animation at Concordia University. Between 1987 and 1990, he made the following student films: Crépuscule, which was awarded first prize at the Festival de Sainte-Thérèse ; 25 watts, which won the Norman McLaren Award in 1990; and Premier regard, which received many awards including the Claude Jutra Bursary at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois and a special mention at the Festival of Mexico. In 1993, his film L'asile was named best animated film at the Montreal International Short Film Festival and won awards at the Huy and Namur film festivals in Belgium. This was followed by the animated short Épaves in 1996.
Pierre was one of four winners of the first Cineweb Contest in 2003. His film Sous un ciel burlesque, which was selected for several festivals including the prestigious Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films, can be viewed on the NFB website at www.onf.ca/engrenage . He has since collaborated on projects for the Animation and Youth Studio. In particular, he designed the NFB's 2003 animated Christmas card and did the animation work on the NFB site at www.onf.ca/depanneursylvestre . He's now working on a film project.
