Portrait Brault Nicolas

Born in Montreal in 1975, Nicolas Brault studied graphic design at the Université du Québec à Montréal. While still a student, he created two animated shorts directly on a computer graphics tablet: L'oeil (1999) and Vermino (2000).

After winning the NFB's Cinéaste recherché(e) competition in 2000, Nicolas made Antagonia, an astonishing film about two birds that live in a topsy-turvy land of ice and the fish that follow them everywhere. With this project, he established a personal style marked by naivety, purity of form, and playfulness.

In 2002, Nicolas joined the crew of the Sedna IV on its Arctic mission. The resulting film, Islet, uses the clean lines of Inuit art and a touch of whimsy to depict a world where whales fall out of the sky and fish turn into balloons. The piece is an ode to the Far North, which is disappearing into the ocean a little more each year.

At present, Nicolas is working on the script for his next film, Brésil.
